Hosting a Holiday Party at Home? Rent the Backdrop, Lights and Tree
Answer first: the pieces that make a December party feel like an event, not just a dinner, are the ones you would never buy for one night: a styled holiday backdrop, a pre-lit tree, a champagne wall, a photo booth. All of them are listed on LEND-IT.CA. A gold sequin backdrop rents for about $15 a day, 96 feet of warm string lights for $6, LED ice buckets for $8.50, and a tabletop raclette grill for $15. Styled pieces run higher: a holiday backdrop at $200 a day, a pre-lit 7.5 ft tree at $250.
Most people plan a December party in November. That is also when lenders' December weekends fill, so book the decor when you send the invitations.
What makes a holiday party feel different from a regular dinner?
Three things, and none of them is more food.
- A place to take the photo. Guests gravitate to one corner with good light and a backdrop. Give them one.
- Warm, low light. Overhead lights off, string lights and candles on. It changes the room more than any decor.
- Something to do. A raclette grill in the middle of the table, karaoke after dessert, or a photo booth by the door.
The tables, chairs and serving gear for a big group are covered in our post on hosting 20 people this fall. This post is about the atmosphere.
What can you rent for a holiday photo corner?

- Christmas tree rentals - $250 a day in Mississauga. Choose Winter Glam Green or Frosted White, both 7.5 ft and pre-lit with warm white LEDs.

How do you light a room for a party without buying lights?
- 96 ft of LED string lights - warm white, $6 a day, Ottawa area
- Fairy lights - 40-inch strands, $15 a day for ten strands, up to $45 for the full forty
- LED wax candles - $2 a day in Toronto, the look of candlelight with no open flame near coats, curtains or children
- LED ice buckets - $8.50 a day in Brampton, 5 litre, batteries included. They light the drinks table and keep the bottles cold.
String lights run along a curtain rod or a mantel do most of the work. Turn the overheads off before the first guest arrives and leave them off.
What can guests actually do at the party?
- Reversible party grill and raclette machine - $15 a day, Ottawa area. A grill or flat top in the middle of the table turns dinner into something people make together.
- Karaoke machine with two wireless mics - $19 a day in North York
- Digital photo booth, setup and pickup included - $395 on weekdays, $550 on weekends, Gatineau lender
- iPad photo booth - $500 a day
- Hot beverage dispenser - 100 cups, $30 a day in Toronto, for cider, cocoa or coffee after dinner
A photo booth is the most expensive item on this list, and for a work party or a big family gathering it is also the one people remember. For a smaller night, a shimmer wall and a phone on a stand does most of the same job.

How do you book holiday party rentals?
- Reserve in November for December weekends. The first three Saturdays of December are the busiest dates of the year for decor lenders.
- Confirm pickup, delivery and setup. Trees, walls and photo booths are large. Several lenders deliver or set up for a fee, and the digital photo booth includes it.
- Take photos at pickup and return and keep messages with the lender in the app.
